Vendors, crafters, reagents and references — with a clear distinction between Classic and Forever data.

Quick answer: where can I get quest items?
First determine whether the item is a monster drop, vendor stock, a crafted item or an item traded by other players. A Classic vendor might sell a recipe rather than the finished product. For crafted items, check the reagents and ask a crafter or use the auction house.
A documented example is the quest series in the Badlands. Wowhead Forever lists the following requirements, but ForEveroth does not confirm that these objectives or vendors are active in the live game.

“Liquid Stone” and “Stone Is Better than Cloth” are side quests, not necessarily mandatory steps for the main series reward.
Example: buying or crafting a Gyrochronatom
“Gyro... What?” needs 1 Gyrochronatom. Classic vendor references in our catalog include Sovik in Orgrimmar (75.6 / 25.2), Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge (68.2 / 44.2) and Jinky Twizzlefixxit in Thousand Needles (77.6 / 77.8). Stock is limited and these locations are not confirmed for Forever. Engineers can also craft it using 1 Iron Bar + 1 Gold Power Core. Read the vendor guide.
Example: is Frost Oil sold by a vendor?
The recipe and the finished item are different. In Classic references, Bro'kin sells the Frost Oil recipe (Alterac Mountains, approximately 38.2 / 38.8), but the quest asks for the crafted Frost Oil. An alchemist can make it with 4 Khadgar's Whisker, 2 Wintersbite and 1 Leaded Vial. See the full materials catalog.
